August 6th, 2007 by Warren T
Raleigh America is recalling 2007 Raleigh Cadent 1.0, Cadent 2.0 and Cadent Carbon bicycle models with carbon forks. There have been three reports of the carbon forks breaking resulting in injuries including a dislocated shoulder, a concussion and a broken jaw.
The bikes were made in China and were sold at Raleigh America dealers nationwide between January 2007 and June 2007.
According to a press release on their web site, if you own one of these bikes you should “Stop using your bike immediately and return it to any Raleigh Dealer for a replacement fork.” You can contact Raleigh at (888) 805-6396 between 9 am and 5 pm Pacific Time.
This recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Wonder if this will be just the first of many carbon fork recalls. I can’t imagine there are really that many manufacturers of carbon forks in China—and don’t the builders all use the same suppliers?

Mike;
This is not the first fork recall no will it be the last.
There are more carbon manufacurers than you can count on your fingers and toes. Many of them are on the pacific rim.
These forks were produced by Cabon Age. Not all of the forks made by Carbon Age are defective or bad. this recall affects about 1200 forks. There are many things that can go wrong during the production of such a product, it is labor intensive and requires the part to be constructed by hand, by a skilled technitian. even if the layup is perfect the resin could be defective or past shelf life, it could be a compaction (pressure issue) or temperature issue. so many variables. Not all carbon is created equal, even from the same producer.

I am starting to get very upset with the Raleigh bicycle company. I bought a Raleigh Cadent
bicycle in June and it was recalled in August. I didn’t even own it for 2 months before the recall and now it has been in the bike shop for almost 2 months waiting for Raleigh to send
them the parts. Usually when there is a recall the company will offer you either a refund or a
replacement product of equal value. Raleigh is not doing anything. If they can’t get the
replacement parts then they should offer a refund. I am tired of waiting for them to do something. I will never buy a Raleigh product again and I hope that anyone reading this
will join me in boycotting their products.
