A first timer’s journal
September 30th, 2007 by Tim Grahl
Ron Seely writes for the Wisconsin State Journal and recently took on a challenge to ditch his SUV and ride his bike to work.
It’s a really interesting read as Seely stays honest about how it went, how much he enjoyed it and the few times he grabbed for his keys:
Then, in the early afternoon, [my wife] makes a fatal error. She suggests that we have steaks for supper. Smitten, I am out the door, into my truck and nosing around the meat counter at Copps before I even realize I have broken my vow. I feel terrible. I pick out two huge T-bones and slink home.
And towards the end of the article is my favorite:
Technically, the no-car experiment is over. But I can’t bring myself to drive. And, besides, I truly enjoy the bike ride. I have been surprised by the ease with which I have been able to incorporate bicycle commuting into my life. Believe me, I am mostly a big earthbound lug who should serve as startling evidence that anybody can do this.
Click over and have a read. It’s very inspiring and worth passing on to your friends.

Today was my First Official Commute By Bicycle! I have been practicing my route for about a month now (I hadn’t been on a bike since I was a teenager prior to this). I was beaming the whole way! It went exactly as planned.
I have a 2007 Schwinn LeTour, decked out with lights (I look like a UFO at night), a rear-trunk with fold down panniers, commuter’s backpack, fenders - the whole shibang.
It takes me 30-35 minutes to ride the 7.7 miles to work. It takes me 25-30 minutes in my car (on my regular route, not the bike route, which would be longer!) What a deal! I get to have two workouts 5 days a week, spend less money, help lower my carbon footprint, and it’s so much fun!
I get such a feeling of empowerment and freedom from being on my bike. I know I’ve never smiled like that while in my car.
My new goal is to convert someone here at work. It’s going to be tough - everyone in my office thinks I’m crazy. Not only for riding the bike, but for keeping it in my cube as well! Ha!

In the house, she found strange people surrounding a queen. She was the Queen of Hearts. The rabbit was also there. When he saw Alice there, he was alarmed.
