ElliptiGO Elliptical Bicycle
by Bike Shop GirlIs it a stair stepper or a bicycle? Maybe both! Meet the ElliptiGO. The elliptical bicycle could be handy for your daily commute. Your business attire may thank you as there is no chain to grab the cuff of your pants or grease if you lean the bike the wrong way at a stop sign.
At its core, the elliptical bike is a fitness device that emulates running outdoors without the associated impact. Many different names for the elliptical bike have emerged recently, including glide bike, stand up bicycle, mobile elliptical trainer, running bike, elliptical road bicycle and outdoor elliptical trainer. Regardless of the moniker, there are four fundamental attributes of an elliptical bike:
1. It is used outdoors
2. It has two wheels
3. It is propelled by an elliptical pedaling motion that emulates running
4. Its performance is comparable to a conventional bicycle.

“4. Its performance is comparable to a conventional bicycle.” What does this mean?
It could mean a lot of things since the diamond frame bike is pretty good at what it does. A few requirements or questions:
1. Can reach the same speed as a normal bike for the same rider.
2. Can go a certain distance in a certain time—energy usage compared to power in 1.
3. Can climb.
4. Can descend.
5. Can ride on a stretch of trail with sand or dirt blown over it as easily as a regular bike (common need along our beach bike path).
6. Stopping distance.
7. Can drop off a curb or hop a curb.
8. Bumps and pot holes
The description on their website of The Death Ride goes a long way to answering 1 through 4. I wouldn’t be surprised if the EliptiGO is better in some respects. And for this commuter site, the visibility (both by drivers and the rider) are certainly improved which would contribute to safety.
I’m a mountain biker, so not much of this is important to me. But it would be interesting to see how it would perform off road.
I recently wrote about this on Bicycle design in the post 5 bikes from the future – got quite a good response from the commenters. I love the concept of it, taking the gym out of the gym!
Can I use one of those kids bike trailer attachments on the back? I’d like to get one, but I have a 2 year old that would need to go into a attachment.
Jessica,
I do not believe that there is a place for an attachment, and mounting on the quick release would be too low. Saying that, I have emailed them with the question.
Thank you!
What about use on wet pavement/roads?
Belinda,
You would have really wet feet, unless they come out with fenders..
good sharing !!!
